What is Pharmacy Practice?

To get started on Pharmacy Course In Kenya, we must first find out what Pharmacy practice is. Pharmacy is a clinical health science that is charged with drug discovery, manufacture, disposal, safe and effective use as well as control of medications. Pharmacy practice requires excellent knowledge of drugs, their mechanism of action, side effects, interactions, mobility and toxicity. It requires knowledge of treatment and understanding of the pathological process.

Pharmacy practice in general includes traditional roles such as dispensing and compounding medications, and it also includes more modern health related services, such as clinical services, reviewing medications for safety and efficacy, and providing drug information. Pharmacists, therefore, are the experts on drug therapy and are the primary health professionals who optimize the use of medication for the benefit of the patients.

Who is a Pharmacist?

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who specialize in proper use, storage, preservation and dispensing of medication. Pharmacists have acquired special training and education and are tasked with various important roles with the aim of improving health outcomes of patients through quality use of medication. A Pharmacists may also be an entrepreneur, owning the pharmacy they practice in.

Pharmacists play an important role in optimization of drug therapy for patients since they have the knowledge about the mode of action of the drug, its physiological effects on the patients body in great detail as well as the metabolism and excretion of the drug. Basically, pharmacists act as a guide on how to use medications, and lets you know about any potential adverse effects of what you take. They are tasked with filling prescriptions issued by doctors and other healthcare professionals as well.

Pharmacy is such a broad field contrary to what most imagine it to be – these are a few examples of career paths a pharmacist can take: community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, industrial pharmacy, regulatory pharmacy and so much more. Pharmacy is more than just dispensing meds on the counter, a pharmacist can contribute to research and testing of new drugs, work in pharmacies, medical clinics, hospitals, universities, and government institutions. They can also provide information about general health topics like diet and exercise, as well as advice on products like home healthcare supplies and medical equipment.
